What are the best "small smartphones" 2021

And if, contrary to current trends, the goal was to find a small, compact and talented phone, without denying quality: with a good autonomy (at least 4 stars in our lab tests), a good camera (at least 3 stars on our test scenes, with photos usable even in low light)… Here are the best GOOD small smartphones, less than 5.5 inches diagonal (13.97 cm).

Apple iPhone 12 mini

Apple iPhone 12 mini

The iPhone 12 Mini has everything of a big (the screen, the performance, the 5G and even the photo modules …). Everything, or almost everything, since Apple had to sacrifice autonomy to compact its mobile. It will not last more than a day of use. So make sure you find an outlet – and buy a charger – before nightfall. But here’s the thing. Despite the raw numbers, this iPhone 12 Mini is still very attractive thanks to its XXS format and the comfort of use that comes with it. The question is whether you’re ready to trade a few centimeters in a pocket for an amputated battery life.

Apple iPhone SE 2020

Apple iPhone SE 2020

If we judged the iPhone 8 as “that good student who annoys teachers by only doing what is strictly necessary to maintain good results”, we can’t say the same about this iPhone SE 2020. Indeed, Apple hasn’t deigned to improve much on its mobile. What was good in 2017, is not so good in 2020. In the Android world, many smartphones at the same price – or even cheaper – do better, it’s a fact. However, the iPhone SE is playing on a board that combines small size and iOS, and that can’t be found anywhere else. You have to take this new iPhone SE for what it is: an average mobile under iOS, with a format almost unique on the smartphone market.

Xiaomi Redmi 7A

Xiaomi Redmi 7A

A worthy heir to the Redmi 6A, the 7A had all the qualities to succeed in the delicate entry-level segment. Only the contrast of its slab is somewhat disappointing. Otherwise, offered at a tight price, the Redmi 7A offers a solid result, well helped by a consequent autonomy and good photo performances. It stands out clearly enough from its direct competition (Nokia 2.1, Gigaset S100 or Galaxy A10) that we recommend it to anyone who has a tight budget but doesn’t want to make too many sacrifices.
