All the smartphones selected have in common to guide you very well with their integrated GPS, to take nice pictures when the light conditions are good and to ensure good autonomy, for at least one day.
The best and most high-end of them justify their excellence with photos in low light without flash of better quality, by common autonomies of more than two days and by a screen quality, in terms of color rendering, reflections, contrast, above average. They also commonly have more storage space, faster components and a construction that better promotes their cooling.
We have selected, by price range, those that deserve your full attention, from the most complete high-end model, with the best autonomy and an advanced photo mode, to the very popular “cheap smartphone”, the best quality / price ratio (good plan) of the moment.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro
The iPhone 11 Pro brings improvements in small touches, just enough to stick to the competition, especially in photo. The gain in autonomy is welcome, as is the appearance of the quick charge out of the box. Without forcing, the iPhone 11 Pro is one of the best smartphones of the moment. It can be criticized for its lack of flagship innovations and its design that remains stuck to the 2017 standards, but it is clear that the work is done.
Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max
The iPhone 11 Pro Max brings improvements by small touches, just enough to stick to the competition, especially in photo. The gain in autonomy is welcome, as is the appearance of the quick charge out of the box. Without forcing, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is one of the best smartphones of the moment. It can be criticized for its lack of flagship innovations and its design that remains stuck to the 2017 standards, but it is clear that the work is done.
At less than 1000 € :
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
As always with Samsung’s new high-end, we don’t have much to reproach this Galaxy S20 Ultra. The Korean flagship of this early decade collects five stars for a deserved flawless performance. It fulfills its mission as a technological showcase without any complexes and presents itself as the best of the smartphones passed in our laboratory. Simply put, whatever the user’s intended use, this S20 Ultra will do the job. So much so that it even allows itself to integrate a 5G chip to anticipate the new generation of mobile networks.
Apple iPhone XS Max
One can find the iPhone Xs Max stingy in novelties and excessively expensive, but Apple has managed to reproduce the very good recipe of the iPhone X. The Xs Max is to the smartphone market what gourmet cuisine is to the restaurant market. It seems to be very expensive for little, but it remains excellent.
At less than 800 € :
Samsung Galaxy S20+
Without too many surprises, the Galaxy S20+ is the perfect compromise between a compact S20 and an oversized S20 Ultra. It is therefore a complete and pleasant to use smartphone, whatever the use. A good top of the range, in short.
Samsung S20 FE 5G
The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G is overall a great success. It successfully takes over the elements that work for the Galaxy S family and opts for a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC that has long been in demand in Europe. Samsung now has a smartphone that rivals the Xiaomi Mi 10 and OnePlus 8 in terms of both technology and price.
At less than €600 :
Huawei P30 Pro
Year after year, Huawei improves its recipe and this P30 Pro is a good example. From the screen to the photo – forgetting the audio – Huawei’s ultra-high-end photomaniacal mobile is a true success story. Its 3 different optics, if not flawless, offer valuable versatility in photography. And the smartphone built around it all offers an impeccable experience.
Xiaomi Mi Note 10
The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is simply one of the best smartphones of the moment. In spite of some slowness, its camera is very interesting and its 108 Mpx sensor will satisfy the lovers of well detailed pictures. It is a balanced terminal that does not forget to offer good performance and a solid autonomy. It does not have much envy to many smartphones, which are much more expensive.
At less than 400 € :
Poco Poco F2 Pro
The Poco F2 Pro is a good smartphone, but it may be a bit too late to be on the market. The Realme X50 Pro 5G released some time ago and at the same price offers a slightly better offer – especially in pictures. But let’s not forget the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 which, even if it doesn’t have the latest chipset, looks much better in pictures. It’s up to you to make your choice according to your uses…
Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite
The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite finally lives up to its name. It includes almost all the assets that make the success of the Mi Note 10. Almost, because the Lite version looks a lot worse in pictures. If this is a secondary aspect in your choice, the Mi Note 10 Lite may be a good choice of cell phone. If not, we suggest you turn to the Oppo Reno2 or Google Pixel 3a.
At less than 300 € :
Poco X3 NFC
The Poco X3 NFC is a credible alternative to the Poco F2 Pro. While it doesn’t have an Oled panel or the most powerful chip, its good display benefits from 120 Hz and its mid-range processor is Qualcomm’s newest processor, which gives it excellent performance. The only downside is, as is often the case in photos, but even there it manages to surprise. It does much better than the competition, including the Redmi Note 9 Pro and the Oppo A9.
Huawei Nova 5T
The Honor 20 was a “good product, but it doesn’t stand out” and we make the same observation here with this almost perfect copy. This Nova 5T has the same assets and the same weaknesses as its cousin released in May. It is up to you to see who you will trust. Note all the same that in the same range, the Google Pixel 3a is just as correct, but much better in pictures.
At less than 200 € :
Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro
Without any doubt, the Redmi Note 9 Pro is positioned as a good smartphone. Its finishes are pretty, its performance is excellent, its IPS display is well calibrated, its 3.5 mm mini-jack plug is a success and its battery life is solid. It is therefore an interesting choice. However, if it doesn’t lack qualities, this Pro declination doesn’t manage to stand out on the shutter of the picture. An exercise on which the competition is more relevant, for example on the Oppo A9.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S
With the Redmi Note 9S, Xiaomi offers a nice update of its Redmi Note 8 Pro. In addition to a “modernized” design, it has a particularly spectacular autonomy. This is accompanied by solid performance and a well-calibrated IPS display. It would be complete if, like its predecessor, it didn’t stumble on the photographic exercise in which the perhaps a little less vivid Oppo A9 claims much more convincing results.
At less than 150 € :
The Realme C3 is one of the manufacturer’s most affordable proposals on the French market and is establishing itself as an interesting entry-level mobile. In particular, it has a very solid autonomy and good performances that make it a pleasant smartphone for everyday use. However, one should not expect too much in terms of photography, with limited possibilities and a picture quality that suffers in low light conditions. The Oppo A5 mobile tested before it is also struggling in this exercise, but, for the same price, our advice goes to Oppo’s smartphone, which has been awarded 4 stars thanks in particular to its better ergonomics.
Oppo A5 2020
We are quite satisfied with the test of the Oppo A5 edition 2020. Of course, it doesn’t revolutionize the genre and its photo part deserves some adjustments, but it offers solid performances. In this price range, it manages to stand up to mobiles such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T or the Xiaomi Mi A3. Well thought out, easy to handle and very durable, it is a model not to be neglected in its price range.
LET OUR EXPERTS GUIDE YOU
Comment tested smartphones?
Our smartphone tests are based on a large number of measurements, carried out in our laboratory. We thus evaluate the quality of the screen – its color rendering (average delta E), contrast, brightness level or its ability to remain readable outdoors; the photographic quality, thanks to tests shared with the Photo pole; or the sound section (speaker, headphones), in our sound studio. Autonomy is appreciated via a clean application, sticking as well as possible to the average French mobile use, as well as the speed of the processor, the RAM memory, the amount of available storage…
Which smartphone to choose?
Identifying one’s needs is essential, so as not to move towards a product that is too limited or too complicated. Advanced gaming and photo: you need power, storage, RAM memory, a good photo sensor, a large autonomy… Candy Crush and an e-mail from time to time: no need to spend 500 €. You can find our selection of the best Android and iOS smartphones by price range.
Which smartphone has the best autonomy?
With greedy uses and energy-consuming configurations, the battery of our smartphones is not spared. What is the solution? A combination of high capacity (3000 mAh, even 4500 mAh and more) and above all a good optimization. Recharging before the end of the evening is niet! If endurance is your priority, we have selected the best smartphones of the genre.
What size smartphone to choose?
With the surge in content consumption on smartphones, screen sizes have soared. It has become difficult to find a smartphone with a screen less than 5.5 inches (14 cm) diagonal. The trend is for ever larger, ever better defined and ever thinner borders. Here is our selection of the best “small” and “big” smartphones.
Which is the best smartphone to take pictures?
Smartphones have definitively buried compact cameras. With more and more beautiful pictures, more and more photo modules, the smartphone becomes the camera you always carry with you. To be at the top, don’t just focus on the number of megapixels. Large photosites, optical stabilization or even good “telephoto” or “ultra-wide-angle” modules are all good assets. Among all the mobiles that have passed through our photo test scene, we offer you those that have our preference for beautiful photos, in all conditions. If you take a lot of photos, turn to a smartphone with a large storage memory.
