I decided to buy the Google Pixel 3a because the device and the operating system come from one source. Google guarantees updates for the next three years. When I bought the device, it had a version 9.x installed, which I updated without any problems. . Google always distributes newly developed versions of its operating system to devices from its own company first. This was another reason for me to buy. With my previous androids often months passed from the announcement to the update.

The Pixel 3a has a large 5.6 inch OLED – screen. The case fits well in the hand. But the surface is quite smooth and could slip out of your hand. I would recommend to buy a silicone case!

The setup of the device was quick and easy. Insert the Nano-SIM and switch it on. At the first start the device asked for some data and settings and after a few minutes it was ready to go. It could read the data of my old mobile phone without any problems, because they are stored on my Google account. There were no problems whatsoever with the transfer.

The Google Assistant makes this process much easier. Here you can set all sorts of things, including how the phone is protected from prying eyes. You can choose between numerical code, pattern or fingerprint.

I have – just for fun – asked the assistant a few impossible questions by voice command to test it! The answers I got indicate a very well trained AI. Either the answers were accurate or original. Sometimes the assistant babbles a bit too much. And he is also polite. I once thanked him for an answer, then the AI answered me with For You always! To the question: Google, how can you be insulted?the assistant replied: I don’t like it, but I can’t stop you either! Wonderful – I will certainly have a lot of fun with it! You can set up the assistant to listen permanently – so you don’t have to call it every time with the command O.K. Google every time. The sound quality is fantastic, both the voice quality and the music playback have convinced me. I have installed a radio app on the device and saved my favorite stations there. Also Youtube videos are played in very good quality. It’s hard to believe that such small loudspeakers can have such quality: No squawking, no hissing, but really rich sound.

On the subject of security I would like to say that the device has, besides the already known old-fashioned features, only a fingerprint sensor that you can set up with the help of the Google Assistant. The device does not (yet) offer face recognition! Maybe that will come – with a future update of the Android operating system!?

The 5.6 OLED screen offers rich colors, and a good contrast. Unfortunately it is not anti-reflective, so that there can be disturbing light reflections. You can also switch the screen to a dark mode, which makes reading on the screen much more pleasant. I find the large screen very pleasant. One can e.g… Noitzen finally read without straining the eyes. It’s also an advantage for game apps, because you can see details much better.

The battery lasts (under normal use) longer than a whole day, and thinks along with you. The device remembers those apps that are used most often and gives them priority. This means that less important apps have to queue up at the back of the queue for battery power. The battery with its only 3,000 mp/h is a weak point in terms of performance. But the heart of the Google Pixel 3a – theQualcomm Snapdragon 670 – allows you to work fluidly! Of course I have informed myself in advance on various test pages and forums. There this processor was often criticized as too slow, but I cannot confirm that. I don’t need a fast racehorse, but a horse with endurance! The processor power is completely sufficient for what I do with the Smartphone, I use it mainly privately, so I can’t really judge how it proves itself in everyday business life, where one reaches for the phone much more often.

The camera of the Pixel 3a is one of the plus points of this device.12.2 megapixels are offered by the front camera. And it offers a night vision function, which allows to take great pictures even in less light. Very nice. The photos are crisp and sharp.

The Pixel 3a recharges quite quickly. In normal mode it takes 2 hours for a full charge. But there is also the possibility of a quick recharge. It has been criticized in various reviews that the player is not expandable, because it doesn’t have an (additional) card slot! The device has 4 GB internal memory. For me personally this is completely sufficient. In addition, Pixel 3 has a lot of online storage (which can be expanded for a fee if necessary). So this is not necessarily a disadvantage.

Because of its size, the device is rather not suitable for one-handed operation. But the weight of about 150 grams is acceptable, I think..

All in all I can say that I am very satisfied with the Google Pixel 3a. It is a solid middle class smartphone, which is fully sufficient for me. I don’t need a high-end device.

Pluspoints:
+ Sound quality
+ Screen (resolution, colors).
+ Very good camera
+ Stock-Android

Minuspoints
– Battery has too little endurance.

Phone looks very good, but after running Android updates microphone has stopped working. Maybe was defective. Issue with software should be avoided as it’s directly Google phone. I have decided to return it because of that.
