Test Pixel 4 XL: an excellent photophone a little short on autonomy
Google don't forget the fans of big screens. So here is the Pixel 4 XL, the enlarged version of the Pixel 4, with its 6.3-inch slab and its larger battery. We can find all the new features of this new generation made in California, from facial recognition to Soli, including the telephoto lens module.

Lancé at 899 €, it faces the competition's flagships such as theGalaxy S10 from Samsung or theP30 Prode Huawei.
Ergonomics and design
Google seems to have learned from its mistakes. So the Pixel 4 XL does not repeat the notch so clumsily exploited on the Pixel 3 XL. Instead, we find a right forehead housing a bunch of sensors. We also notice a reduction of the lower edge, as the speakers have migrated to the lower edge. The 6.3-inch Oled 90 Hz slab thus occupies 82.5% of the façade. A ratio much lower than the direct competition, but still suitable.
À Left, the Pixel 3 XL. On the right, the Pixel 4 XL.
À In the back, Google has also streamlined its design. The beautiful glass back is only occupied by the photo island and the G from Google. No fingerprint sensor on the back. Nor at the front, since this year the American manufacturer has bet everything on facial recognition. With its operation close to the FaceID of the iPhone, it is proving to be satisfactory. Fast and reliable, the system developed by Google is based on infrared technology and can distinguish the user in all lighting conditions, even in total darkness. The only downside is that the face is recognized even when the eyes are closed. A malicious person can therefore take advantage of a moment of drowsiness to unlock it. Google has promised an update to correct this in the coming months.
Les Different front sensors are also used to implement Motion Sense and Edge Sense. The first one detects when a hand approaches the smartphone to prepare for unlocking, while the second one allows you to control your music by gestures. So many gadget functionalities and random success. So we often find ourselves moving our arms in front of the smartphone without getting the expected result.

In As a matter of ergonomics, the Pixel 4 XL optimizes at best its large size. The lateral locking and volume buttons are very well positioned on the right side. However, the terminal remains difficult to use with one hand with its imposing dimensions (160.4 x 75.1 x 8.2 mm) and its heavy weight (193 g).

Certifié IP68, the Pixel 4 XL is waterproof and dustproof. However, it is not able to accommodate any microSD cards. Nor is it capable of hosting a second nano SIM, since Google has chosen the eSIM, which is still unavailable in France.
Lacune many high-end smartphones, the lack of 3.5 mm mini-jack connectors is still to be deplored on the Pixel 4 XL. Google does not provide a USB-C adapter either. We have thus withdrawn its fifth star in ergonomics and design.
Les Pixel 4 XL's speakers are satisfactory. The first one under the slab and the second one on the lower edge offer a suitable spatialization and sufficient sound to watch a series.
Pixel 4 XL offers a slab that is simply exemplary. The 6.3-inch 90 Hz screen displays at 1440 x 3040 dpi with a resolution of 537 dpi. Oled obliges, one finds a contrast ratio tending towards infinity as well as an imperceptible persistence. The slab is also very well calibrated, thanks to Google's know-how. It is however necessary to make a slight check in the parameters to get the most out of it. By choosing the Natural color profile (see screenshots below), we obtain an average delta E of 1.3. The witness of a faithful color restitution without annoying chromatic aberrations. In the same way, the color temperature is measured at 6,861 K, a value rather close to the video standard of 6,500 K.

Pixel 4 XL screen is also a very good student in readability. In addition to its very low reflectance (39%), it is able to go up to 437 cd/m², enough to remain readable even in direct sunlight. Able to go down to 2 cd/m², it also does not burn the retina in the dark. Finally, the tactile delay is very low (49 ms).
Si the Pixel 4 proves to be spectacular concerning its performances, this XL declination offers more or less the same results. With similar equipment, namely an 855 Snapdragon SoC and 6 GB of RAM, the Pixel 4 XL offers simply exemplary scores with an overall performance index of 104.44. With a score of 100.13, the Pixel 4 XL is slightly better than the Pixel 4 in multitasking, making it the second most comfortable smartphone for multitasking behind the OnePlus 7 (100.19).
In game, the XL model has a lower score than the Pixel 4, but is still excellent with an index of 108.76. The Pixel 4 XL is therefore excellent, but above all versatile.
À each new Pixel, all eyes turn to the photo. Google manages to achieve prowess with equipment that is far from spectacular, but above all thanks to software processing that is light years ahead of the competition. At a time when Xiaomi is announcing smartphones with 108 MP, the Pixel 4 XL offers a 12.2 MP main module and a 2x 16 MP telephoto lens.

Excellents, the results obtained are strictly identical to those of the standard Pixel 4. We therefore advise you to refer to the photo section of Pixel 4, available here, to learn more.
Si the Pixel 4 XL has an Achilles' heel, it is undoubtedly autonomy. Despite its 3,700 mAh, the Google terminal only lasted 14 h 53 min against our SmartViser autonomy protocol, simulating a classic smartphone use. A score that symbolizes a software optimization that can be improved. The score is good in itself, but remains well below those of anXiaomi Mi 9T Pro or aHuawei P30 Pro. In real conditions this corresponds to two days of standard use. Note that the most connected among us will wear it out in less than a day.
Pixel 4 XL can be recharged in 1 h 30 min with the charging unit provided by Google.
