Test Honor 20 Pro: a competitor for the OnePlus 7
/!\ Attention, the software future of this phone is uncertain in light of the sanctions taken by the United States against Huawei/!\
Alors we didn't really know if it would ever arrive in our country, the Honor 20 Pro finally arrived in our hands. Located just above the Honor 20, it retains all the charm of its predecessor, while providing better performance and a 3x zoom.
Affiché at €499 when it was launched (thanks to an ODR of €100 for a short period of time), it comes directly in front of theAsus ZenFone 6, theOnePlus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy A80.
Pas easy to differentiate it from an Honor 20.
Ergonomics and design
Jouer to the game of the 7 differences between the Honor 20 Pro and the Honor 20 is likely to be really complicated as both smartphones are so similar. The Pro version adopts the same format, i.e. a 6.26-inch screen with a 19.5:9 ratio and occupying 85% of the front surface. The notch is once again in the shape of a hallmark, similar to the one on the Honor View 20.
Il only the thickness and weight of the two mobiles differ. The Honor 20 Pro measures 8.34 mm (for a weight of 182 g), where the Honor 20 is limited to 7.87 mm (for a weight of 174 g).
À At the back, it is the return of the 4 photographic sensors arranged vertically and... that's it. The finish of the back is quite different from that of its brother Honor 20 since here it is a new type of design - called "Phantom" (Black - Purple in the case of our test model.) The 3D Mesh technique used to obtain this rendering consists in a vacuum bonding of 3 distinct layers: glass, color and depth.

Au At the level of the slices, the result is still the same as on the Honor 20, and this is not to displease us. So we find the fingerprint reader on the right slice, still clickable. Just above, the volume control buttons. On the opposite side, we have the slot for two SIM cards (no microSD card). Finally, on the lower edge are the USB-C port and a loudspeaker.
Toujours no 3.5 mm mini-jack plug on this model, but USB-C earphones and a 3.5 mm mini-jack to USB-C adapter are included in the box. The results are almost equivalent to what we found on the Honor 20. The output power is still excellent. The dynamic range is wide and the distortion almost zero. Only the stereo reproduction is not as good as the Honor 20, it is much better.
Il benefits from a single loudspeaker located on its lower edge. The sound delivered is very correct, but it tends to saturate at too high a volume. Therefore, prefer moderate use to watch videos on the Internet, for example.
screen of the Honor 20 Pro is therefore a 6.26 inch Full HD+ (2,340 x 1,080 px) for a resolution of 411 dpi.
Contrairement at the Honor 20, to benefit from a good colorimetry, you should not select the "Vivid" display mode but stay on the default mode. It is simply necessary to change the color temperature by selecting the "Warm" option. Thanks to this small modification, one obtains a delta E of 2.3 (less good than that of the Honor 20 strangely). Some drifts above a delta E of 4 are to be noted, but a good part of the colors tend to stay below the value of 2, which does not disturb the use of the smartphone.
Avec At our setting, the color temperature goes from 7,234 Kelvin to 6,529 K, which is almost the video standard (6,500 K).
La maximum brightness is slightly lower than the Honor 20 (432 cd/m² vs. 498 cd/m²), but still fully sufficient for reading in direct sunlight, especially since the screen limits reflections rather well (54% reflectance). The minimum brightness of 1 cd/m² makes it possible to read comfortably in a dark room.
display experience is fluid (75 ms touch delay and 14 ms remanence time), equivalent to that of the Honor 20. We simply regret that the manufacturer did not insist on offering an Oled panel, as the LCD here limits the contrast to only 931:1.
smartphone embeds Huawei's home-made chip, the Kirin 980 here with 8 GB of RAM. Enough to make the smartphone fast and fluid. In fact, in our multitasking performance test (memory + CPU), the Kirin 980 scored 94.86 points, a score that places it not so far behind the OnePlus 7 Pro, the best in our ranking to date.
Par elsewhere, the phone does not heat up much, reaching a maximum temperature of 37°C.
Températures readings after recording video in FHD 1 080p.
In game, it is the Mali-G76 M10 chip that takes over. With the 8 GB of embedded RAM, you might as well know that all the games run smoothly, an excellent combination for mobile gamers. So much so that its score of 85 places it in 4th position among all the smartphones tested by Les Numériques to date, just behind the Realme 3 Pro (92.67). Great performance !
Honor 20 Pro is also equipped with a 48MP Sony IMX 586 main sensor. The difference with the Honor 20 is in its lens which opens at f/1.4, the largest aperture for a smartphone today. Its second sensor of 16 MP has a wide-angle lens at 117°. The third sensor is an 8MP with a 3x telephoto lens (5x hybrid and 30x digital). Finally, its fourth sensor of 2 MP still allows to capture macro shots, with the same result as on the Honor 20, that is to say close to the gadget so the result is poor.
Module main : 48 Mpx, f/1.4, eq. 26 mm
We will detail the results of the 3 main sensors by comparing them with those of theOnePlus 7, a smartphone sold at an equivalent price. Note, however, that the much cheaper Pixel 3a delivers an even more convincing performance in pictures, at the price of small sacrifices on a few other features.
Sur the main module, the two devices defend themselves rather well. On the Honor 20 Pro, the color rendering is much more vivid than that of the OnePlus 7. On the other hand, the details are a little less pronounced. But this is hardly noticeable under real conditions.
Au night photo game, the game is immediately less tight. The Honor 20 Pro was unable to manage its low sensitivity (ISO 2,500) compared to that of the OnePlus 7 (ISO 5,000). The scene is much too exposed and you lose a lot of sharpness. The software also applies a very strong smoothing, which can be found to a lesser extent on the OnePlus smartphone.
Module wide-angle: 16 Mpx, f/2.2, eq. 17 mm
As OnePlus 7 does not have a wide-angle sensor, we compared the Honor 20 Pro with the Samsung A80. With the wide-angle module, the Honor 20 Pro does rather well. The composition is more detailed and closer to reality. In addition, the software processing smooths the picture very little.
By night, the Honor 20 Pro is also doing better, but not by much. Both shots are not really good, the scene is noisy on both sides. Still a rather dull rendering for the A80, when Honor's mobile manages to reproduce colors rather faithful to what we could see in daylight, even if it's still not famous.
Module "telephoto" 3x: 8 MP, f/2.4, eq. 78 mm
Comme Huawei with its P30, Honor offers a 3x telephoto lens on its Honor 20 Pro. The latter is 8 Mpx (compared to 10 Mpx on the Huawei). The 20 Pro can also capture photos with a 5x zoom (hybrid) and can go up to 30x digitally.
Force is to note that in 3x zoom the smartphone does admirably well, beyond that, the contrast is a bit strong. The software applies a really minimal smoothing which allows the maximum amount of detail to appear on the shot. On the other hand, as soon as you switch to 5x zoom, the result is quite different. Even if the color rendering remains very faithful, the scene becomes blurred and the details are difficult to discern.
Mode portrait, front sensor and vidéo
À At the front, Honor's smartphone is equipped with a 32MP sensor, like the Honor 20. It therefore suffers from the same problems, the quality is good, but does not reach the quality expected from a phone sold at this price. Same thing in portrait mode: the skin is very smooth if you don't take care to disable this option and, above all, the trimming of the most complex areas (beard hair, hair) is not perfect. Note, however, that it is possible to adjust the depth-of-field effect to adjust the background blur.
Il is possible to shoot up to 4K at 30 frames per second. With the Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) and Electronic Image Stabilizer (EIS), videos avoid the shake generated by a phone held with one hand.
mobile embeds a 4,000 mAh battery that allows it to last 18 h 28 min on our SmartViser test. It's a bit better than the 18 in the Honor 20, but above all much better than its competitors OnePlus 7 and Samsung Galaxy A80. In normal use, this represents 2 days of use.
For recharges it, you can count on its 22.5 W block that offers fast charging. About 30 minutes are necessary to regain half of its battery. To be at 100%, allow about an hour more.
