Test Huawei P Smart Z: an interesting idea on paper

Nouvelle iteration in Huawei's P Smart range, the P Smart Z stands out from its peers with a screen that occupies almost the entire front facade thanks to the addition of a retractable front camera. In a segment where phones are jostling for space, and with a price tag of €279, it will have to compete with theOppo RX17 Neo, theXiaomi Mi A2 or the recently launched Honor 20 Lite.

Ergonomics and design

It is a first at Huawei. In order to stand out from the tough competition in the mid-range sector, the Chinese manufacturer opted to integrate a retractable photo module. The main benefit of this technology is that it eliminates the need for a notch on the front surface.

Loin to offer a slab covering the entire surface of the mobile, this Huawei P Smart Z has a 6.5-inch screen that occupies just over 81% of the front of the smartphone. It is an LCD screen with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 px. The edges are rather thin, except on the lower part which accommodates a small chin.

Comme customary for some time at the brand, the back has a two-tone glossy finish, a bit like the Google Pixel 3. A barely perceptible demarcation that houses a fingerprint reader as well as two 16 and 2 Mpx photo sensors.

The tour of the object ends with the traditional placement of the volume and power buttons, located on the right side. Nothing on the opposite side, with the card slots on top. It can accommodate a dual-SIM configuration or a microSD card and a SIM card. Right next to it is the front camera. The 3.5 mm mini-jack port is located on the bottom edge, next to the USB-C port and the speaker.

P Smart Z features a 6.5-inch screen with an IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 px (391 dpi). For very good colorimetric results, please refer to the settings. Indeed, the default settings are really not optimal, with a Delta E pointing to 3.4 and a color temperature exceeding 9,400 K.

For to benefit from the best rendering, it will be necessary to use the mode of "vivid" colors, which offers a Delta E of 1.5. An excellent value worthy of high-end smartphones. The color temperature is thus reduced to a value much closer to the standard (6,500 K) and measured at 7,076 Kelvin. It's still a bit cold, but nothing really bothering to use.

Huawei P Smart Z is easy to read in direct sunlight, thanks to maximum brightness of 490 cd/m² and a light reflection rate of 49%. Viewing content at night will also be comfortable, with a minimum brightness of 2.3 cd/m².

afterglow time of 13 ms and tactile delay of 110 ms are not exceptional, but still correct. Finally, the contrast ratio of the IPS slab reaches 1057:1.

P Smart Z embeds an in-house chip (Kirin 710F), a sort of evolution of the Kirin 710 that equips the P Smart+ 2019, for example. Coupled with 4 GB of RAM, it ensures good fluidity that allows use without any real compromise. All the more so since the temperature of the phone does not really rise when it is used.

For the game, it is a Mali-G51 iGPU which is at the controls. Even if it's no longer in its infancy (it dates from 2016), we must admit that it's still enough to play big games, in particularPUBG which runs smoothly at full speed, even if you'll have to be satisfied with the graphics in HD, the smartphone does not support more.

La output power from this 3.5mm mini-jack is not the best and won't pay homage to your greediest headphones. However, it does make up for the rest since the distortion is excellent. The dynamics are also very good, as is the stereo reproduction.

In If you don't have headphones, you can rely on the speaker on the lower edge. It will be especially useful for watching videos or some social networking sites, but will not be powerful enough to listen to good quality music.

new smartphone from Huawei offers two photo modules on the back. The main one has a 16MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens and the second one has a 2MP sensor and is only used to manage depth of field. Theoretically, this main sensor should therefore offer better photos for portraits.

main sensor of 16 Mpx with its 2 Mpx sensor.

In In daylight, the main sensor is able to hold its own against the Honor 20 Lite's sensor, without however being able to exceed it. We note that, overall, the colors of the scene are duller and the details less marked. This is due to a slightly too heavy software processing on the side of the P Smart Z, which smoothes a lot.

Lorsque at nightfall, the P Smart Z manages to overtake its opponent. Ilshooteen goes up less in ISO (2,500 vs. 3,200 ISO), which allows it to let less noise appear and avoid applying too much smoothing, which would risk masking details. Exposure is also better controlled and does not burn the shot.

La video is limited to Full HD 1080p, 60 frames per second or 19.3:9 format. With this smartphone without stabilization, you will have to be careful not to move too much during recording, otherwise you will get poor quality videos.

sensor is hidden in the upper edge of the mobile.

For the front part, it is a module equipped with a 16 Mpx sensor with opening lens at f/2.2 which will take care of yourselfies. The quality is rather good, especially since the capture is helped by the artificial intelligence that will adapt to the place where you are. Lebokehproposed at the front is really not perfected, the trimming is complicated, especially at the hair level.

phone embeds a 4 000 mAh battery. More than enough to give it more than two days of autonomy according to our SmartViser test. In number of hours, that makes 19h01, a very honourable time which places it in front of its main opponents.

For recharge it completely, it will take about 2 hours with the supplied AC adapter.
