Test Smartphone Huawei Y6 2019: the entry level without panache

Y6 2019 is one of Huawei's entry-level models. At 159 €, this smartphone does not claim to revolutionize the genre, but simply makes the most basic functions of the smartphone accessible.

An device in standards.

Lancé from 159 € last April, and often available cheaper, the Y6 2019 will have a lot of work to do to stand out from the fierce competition in the entry-level segment. We're thinking in particular of theXiaomi Redmi Note 7 and Realme 3 Pro, big chunks below the €200 mark. Or the Samsung Galaxy A10 at the same price. Finally, cheaper, but no less deserving, theXiaomi Redmi 7A is a serious rival. In this ruthless universe, let's see if the Y6 2019 has the arguments to stand out.

Ergonomics and design

The design of the Huawei Y6 2019 is disconcertingly classic: 6.1-inch IPS slab in 19:9 format with a front space occupancy rate of over 77%, endless teardrop-shaped notches for the selfie module, black borders of varying thickness ... a passe-partout look all in all.

2019, one year too many for the drip notch ?

À this tariff, no glass or metal, but plastic. Glossy and attractive fingerprints, it has no complaints about the finish. It is not the most beautiful terminal on the market, but it will not stand on a table next to other devices. In fact, the phone is quite light (150 g) and easy to use, even though, like all smartphones over 6 inches, it is necessary to use both hands to control the beast well.

An back as reflective as the slab.

In At the entry level, on the connector side, the standard is still at the micro-USB port. A connector that is becoming increasingly rare on the 2019 models, but at least it will be possible to recharge the device with one of the many cables accumulated in recent years. Two nano-SIM ports and a microSD are also present, which is all the more interesting since out of the 32 GB announced, only about twenty are really free.

À at this price, no USB-C socket.

An mini-jack connector welcome.

Y6 2019 is also equipped with a 3.5 mm mini-jack plug, which is always handy for connecting headphones or wired earphones. It delivers a fairly accurate sound. The wide dynamic range makes it easy to distinguish the different nuances within a song. Crosstalk is handled correctly, ensuring good stereo reproduction and distortion is kept to a minimum. Finally, as is often the case with first price headphones, the output power is relatively low and will not allow the most demanding headphones to deliver their full potential.

speaker is located on the bottom edge of the smartphone. It can be used as a back-up solution when watching a short video, but you should avoid turning up the sound too high, which quickly saturates.

Anslab just satisfactory.

La 6.1-inch IPS panel displays slightly higher definition than HD (1560 x 720 px). The default setting (Standard mode) of the panel does not live up to our expectations: high color temperature (7,680 Kelvins against 6,500 K expected), colors that therefore seem very "cold" and Delta E at 4.2, we expect less than 3 so that the human eye does not perceive the colorimetric drifts.

For to reach a more satisfactory result, we opted for the Warm mode. And great good has taken from it. The temperature thus fell to 6,600 K, a value very close to the norm. The Delta E has not evolved as spectacularly, but it now reaches 3.9, a more suitable figure.

Si the Warm mode allows to obtain better colorimetric results, this is done a little at the expense of the maximum luminosity. Initially measured at 509 cd/m², it goes down slightly (493 cd/m²). Nothing of redhibitory thus. As a result of the IPS slab, the contrast ratio is not very attractive and is 1209:1. In combination with a really high reflectance (61.6%), this does not make Y6 a friend in bright environments. At night, despite a minimum brightness of 4.3 cd/m², the terminal shouldn't dazzle too much for those who enjoy night-time activities. On a daily basis, HD definition is sufficient for most uses, and with a limited afterglow of 65 ms and a tactile delay of 18 ms, the slab is quite responsive.

Sur For this entry-level model, Huawei did not choose a homemade chip, but Mediatek's Helio A22 SoC, a low-power, 2 GHz chip with a four-core architecture. The RAM is limited to 2 GB and the graphics part is based on a PowerVR GE8320, enough to handle even the most basic operations.

Cependant, once we launch our performance test protocol, the Y6 quickly shows its limits. For the RAM test, Huawei's device achieves a score of 41.20, the lowest measured by us. This is worse than theRedmi GO, which was for a long time at the bottom of our ranking. TheGalaxy A10, which is priced similarly, scores nearly 60, while the "defending champion", theOnePlus 7 Pro, scores 100. The conclusion is quite simple: the Huawei Y6 2019 is not a high-performance device. It will be necessary to avoid opening too many applications at the same time.

Les things don't get any better in the in-game test where we get 15.63. Once again, this is the worst score in our ranking. On average, during the test, the game simulator was only able to maintain 8 frames per second, with a peak at 10 fps. Some 2D titles that are not very demanding are still playable, but for 3D, we will have to move to a more powerful phone.

Seule satisfaction, the heating of the device is very contained. After an intensive video and photo capture session, the smartphone does not exceed 34°C, and even then, only around the camera. The rest of the camera does not show any real heat.

For its Y6 version 2019, Huawei makes the choice of simplicity. Thus the terminal integrates a single 13MP photo sensor, with a focal length equivalent to 27mm in 24 x 36 and opening at f/1.8. A classic sobriety in this price range, but one that doesn't promise much.

plus photo module simples

Module main: 13 Mpx, eq. 26 mm, f/1,8

Capable to make very good photophones, like theP30andP30 Pro, Huawei does not seem to apply as much to its entry-level smartphones. If this seems logical, the result is a more than neglected photo component.

By day, the Y6 2019 manages to capture correct shots. Admittedly the restitution of colors is not the most faithful which is, but the optical distortions are well controlled and the level of contrasts (although it is undoubtedly forced by the software) is not unpleasant. However, the stitching is not exceptional and when faced with aRedmi Note 7 the Y6 shows its limits. Xiaomi's terminal offers more accurate colors and a higher level of detail.

By night, the Redmi Note 7 does not perform miracles, but it is generally doing better than the Y6 2019. Huawei's aircraft is simply bad. The strong increase in sensitivity (ISO 5925) allows, certainly to have a clearer image (more yellow in fact), but this is at the expense of the dive. The omnipresent noise drowns out the details under a strong grain. The restitution of the colors makes lose all fidelity and it emerges this grayish complexion. Clearly, the Y6 2019 is not the best smartphone to take pictures at night, far from it !

Module forehead and fashion vidéo

front module requires only a simple 8MP sensor with f/2 opening optics. Without being transcendental, the shots are correct. It is necessary to avoid sliding on the "embellish" mode, otherwise even the most chiseled faces will turn into wax statues. For the video part, the sensor can film in 720p and 1080p at 30 fps maximum. The autofocus can be quite fast, without being one of the most reactive of its kind. In the register of regrets, we note the total absence of stabilization.

Si the Huawei Y6 2019 weighs only 150 grams, partly due to its battery of only 3020 mAh. Combined with a low power consumption chip and an undefined screen, we had the right to hope that it would last long enough. After the conclusion of our SmartViser protocol (simulating intensive use, with video playback, downloads, network connections, calls and SMS messages), the Huawei terminal lasted 16 h 33 min. A really correct autonomy, which in theory allows the smartphone to last a little more than two days before being recharged. The fifth star in autonomy was not far away (a big ten minutes).

Anautonomy which allows to hold 2 days.

In Due to the lack of fast charging, it took about 2 h 40 min to fully charge the smartphone with the supplied power supply.
